The body has difficulty adapting, and this can result in Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Going too high, too fast, skipping necessary acclimatization days, dehydration, exertion, and lack of proper nutrition raise the risk. 

The cold and the long hours spent walking also put extra stress on the body. Everyone is different, so even fit and healthy trekkers can be affected. Proper pacing and slow ascent are the best forms of prevention. 

At What Elevation Does the Risk Begin on the Manaslu Trek? 

The danger of altitude sickness starts on the Manaslu Trek when trekkers ascend higher than 2,500 to 3,000 meters.  It starts to receive less oxygen than it’s used to at lower elevations, particularly around villages like Namrung and Lho. 

The risk increases with every step toward Samagaun, Samdo, and, ultimately, the Larke Pass at 5,106 meters. Signs may also appear in the fit and seasoned trekker. The further up you go, the harder your body must work to accommodate.

When to Descend Immediately?

If you get severe altitude sickness on the Manaslu Circuit, then descend promptly.
