Detailed Overview

Welcome to the majestic mountains and pristine forests of the Annapurna Conservation Area. The Mardi Himal Trek allows you to immerse yourself in the wilderness of the Annapurna region, explore its remote highlands, and experience the authentic culture of Magar and Gurung ethnic communities. Perfect for those seeking to reconnect with nature, this journey offers the chance to witness magnificent sunrises and breathtaking views of the Annapurna range, including the stunning Machhapuchhre peak.

Journey to Mardi Himal Trek

A hidden gem in the Annapurna region of Nepal, Mardi Himal Trek offers a unique and tranquil trekking experience. Journeying through serene forests and charming villages- sneaky mountains and the trees are friends on this trail. Recently, the trail has been getting quite an attention for its stunning vistas and crowd-free trail.

Starting from Kathmandu, the official trail begins in Phedi, a few hours’ drive from vibrant Pokhara. The trail from Phedi winds through lush rhododendron forests, which are especially vibrant during the spring season when the flowers are in full bloom. As you ascend, you pass through picturesque villages like Australian Camp and Forest Camp, where you can experience the warm hospitality of the local Gurung and Magar communities.

The trail continues to Deurali and then to the rest camp. Trekkers will notice the thinning of villages as they approach the rest camp. We notice the change in the landscape while approaching the high camp from the rest camp.

From High Camp, you navigate the narrow and steep trails along the ridge to reach the upper viewpoint. You embark on the final push to the upper viewpoint. It is a challenging section, yet the awe-inspiring panorama of the Annapurna Range, including the majestic peaks of Mardi Himal, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli, is simply rewarding.

Besides the majestic Himalayan scenery, another major highlight of the Mardi Himal Trek is the sunrise over these towering giants. As the sun's rays fall on the peaks, they glow in shades of gold and orange, creating a breathtaking spectacle.

After enjoying the glorious sights, we follow the same trail to return and take the route to Sidding village at the end of the trek. Passing through the tranquil village of Siding, we take a vehicle to drive back to Pokhara. Reminiscing about the memories of the trek, we explore the bustling market of Pokhara at night before driving to Kathmandu the next day.

Creating a deep connection with nature, we conclude our beautiful journey of the Mardi Himal Trek. Beautifully fused with natural and cultural beauty, it is a perfect journey for anyone looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure in the northwestern Himalayas of Nepal.

    Useful Information

How Difficult Is the Mardi Himal Trek?

Our Mardi Himal Trek is graded easy to moderate — one of the most accessible high-altitude treks we offer in the Annapurna region. Most days involve 4–6 hours of walking on well-marked trails through rhododendron forests and open ridgelines, with elevation gains of 400–900m per day.

The most demanding section is summit day, when you push from High Camp along a narrow, exposed ridge to the Upper Viewpoint at 4,240m. No technical climbing is required, but cold temperatures and strong winds above 3,500m are common and should be expected.

We design our 8-day itinerary with built-in acclimatisation specifically to make this achievable and enjoyable for anyone with a solid fitness base. If you are wondering whether this trek is right for you, our team is always happy to help you decide.

Is the Mardi Himal Trek Good for Beginners?

Absolutely — our Mardi Himal Trek is one of the best introductions to Himalayan trekking available in Nepal, provided you arrive with realistic preparation. The trail is shorter and less committing than the Annapurna Circuit or Everest Base Camp, and our daily itinerary is designed to be manageable even for those new to multi-day mountain hiking.

That said, trekking at altitude is different from hiking at lower elevations — the air is thinner and the weather can shift quickly. The altitude reaches 4,500m at base camp, so we strongly recommend starting a fitness routine 6–8 weeks before your departure.

Our licensed, English-speaking guides are especially valuable for first-time trekkers — they manage all logistics, monitor your health throughout the journey, and ensure you get the most out of every day on the trail.

Fitness Level Required for Mardi Himal Trek

A moderate level of cardiovascular fitness is all you need to join our Mardi Himal Trek. You should be comfortable walking 4–6 hours per day on uneven terrain, including sustained uphill sections at altitude. You don't need to be an athlete — just willing to prepare.

We recommend 6–8 weeks of regular aerobic training before departure — hiking, cycling, swimming, or jogging all work well. Leg and core strength are equally important, particularly for the descent from High Camp, which places real load on the knees.

If you have no prior trekking experience, we suggest our 8-day itinerary for a more comfortable pace. Arriving physically prepared means a safer, more enjoyable experience — and better chances of reaching the Upper Viewpoint on a clear day.

Best Time for Mardi Himal Trek

We run our Mardi Himal Trek year-round, but the best times to join are spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November). Spring is our most popular season — rhododendron forests are in full bloom, and clear skies deliver outstanding views of Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range.

Autumn brings equally settled weather with crisp air and excellent post-monsoon visibility, making October and November another excellent window. Winter trekking is possible but cold, with snowfall likely above 3,000m.

The monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rainfall and reduced visibility. Each season has its own character, and our team can help you choose the right time based on your preferences and schedule.

Mardi Himal Trek Weather by Month

The weather on our Mardi Himal Trek varies considerably by month and altitude. Around Pokhara and Phedi, temperatures are mild year-round. At High Camp and the Upper Viewpoint, however, freezing nights are common even during peak trekking season — this is something we always prepare our trekkers for.

October and November offer the most stable and clear conditions. March to May is warm at lower elevations but cold at night above 3,500m. June to September brings the monsoon — frequent rain, cloud cover, and reduced summit visibility.

December and January are the coldest months, with High Camp temperatures regularly dropping to -10°C or lower. Understanding the weather by month helps you pack correctly and set realistic expectations for your mountain views.

    Mardi Himal Trek Cost

Our Mardi Himal Trek is priced per person based on group size — the more people you travel with, the better the value. All our packages are fully inclusive, so you can focus entirely on the experience.

    Group Size Price Per Person
    1 Pax (Solo) USD 985
    2-4 Pax USD 765
    5-8 Pax USD 730
    9-15 Pax USD 710

Our package covers all the essentials: airport transfers, Kathmandu–Pokhara flight, private jeep and bus transfers, three-star hotel stays in Kathmandu and Pokhara, tea house accommodation on the trail, all meals during trekking days, ACAP permit, a licensed English-speaking guide, one porter per two trekkers, and equipment including a duffel bag, sleeping bag, first aid kit, and oximeter.

International flights, Nepal entry visa (USD 30–125), and travel insurance covering helicopter evacuation are not included and should be arranged before departure. On the trail, budget separately for hot showers, bottled water, snacks, phone charging, Wi-Fi, laundry, and tips for your guide and porter.

Permits Required for Mardi Himal Trek

As of March 2026, only one permit is required to complete our Mardi Himal Trek. The Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) is mandatory for all trekkers entering the region. The TIMS Card has been officially discontinued and is no longer required.

When you trek with us, we handle the ACAP permit as part of your package — it is one less thing to think about before you arrive. The permit is checked at multiple points along the route, so it must be carried at all times on the trail.

If you are trekking independently, the ACAP can be obtained at the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu or Pokhara before reaching the trailhead at Phedi. Permit fees are subject to change, so we always recommend verifying current requirements before you travel.

5 vs 7 Days Mardi Himal Trek

A 5-day Mardi Himal Trek covers the core trail only — starting and ending in Pokhara, with no buffer days for acclimatisation or bad weather. It suits experienced trekkers who are short on time and already comfortable trekking at altitude. The pace is fast, and the margin for error is slim.

A 7-day itinerary adds a more comfortable pace with adequate rest built in. It typically includes travel from Pokhara, all core trail days, and a buffer for weather or acclimatisation — making it a better fit for most trekkers, including those with limited high-altitude experience.

Our standard package is the full 8-day Mardi Himal Trek — and it is what we recommend for the majority of our guests. Starting with your arrival in Kathmandu on Day 1, we fly to Pokhara on Day 2 before hitting the trailhead at Phedi. The trek progresses through Deurali, Rest Camp, and High Camp, with summit day on Day 5 reaching the Upper Viewpoint at 4,240m. Day 6 descends through the scenic Sidding village back to Pokhara, and Days 7 and 8 cover the return to Kathmandu and your departure. This structure gives you the right pace, proper acclimatisation, and the best possible chance of a clear summit morning.

Solo vs Guided Mardi Himal Trek

Trekking Mardi Himal with one of our licensed guides offers clear advantages — local route knowledge, full logistics management, health monitoring at altitude, and seamless communication with tea house owners along the way. For first-time trekkers or anyone unfamiliar with Nepal's mountain environment, we strongly recommend a guided experience.

The trail is well-marked, and solo trekking is permitted, making it a viable option for experienced and confident hikers. If you prefer to go independently, hiring a porter — even without a guide — significantly improves comfort on the trail.

Whichever approach you choose, we recommend sharing your itinerary with a trusted contact before you set off. Our team is always available to advise on the best option for your specific experience level and priorities.

Altitude Sickness on Mardi Himal Trek

Altitude sickness is a serious consideration on our Mardi Himal Trek, particularly above 3,500m as you approach the Upper Viewpoint at 4,240m and base camp at 4,500m. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) can affect anyone regardless of age or fitness level and should never be dismissed.

Common symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and disturbed sleep. The most effective prevention strategies are ascending gradually, staying hydrated with 3–4 litres of water daily, and avoiding alcohol at elevation — all things our guides actively monitor throughout the trek.

If AMS symptoms develop and do not improve with rest, descending immediately is the only correct response. We recommend discussing preventive medication such as Diamox with your doctor before departure, particularly if you have a history of altitude sensitivity. Our team carries an oximeter on every trek to monitor oxygen levels daily.

Travel Insurance for Mardi Himal Trek

Comprehensive travel insurance is an essential part of joining any of our treks — not an optional extra. A suitable policy for the Mardi Himal Trek must explicitly cover high-altitude trekking to at least 5,000m, emergency helicopter evacuation, medical treatment, trip cancellation, and lost baggage.

Standard travel policies frequently exclude trekking above 3,000–4,000m, so reading the fine print carefully before purchasing is critical. Emergency helicopter evacuation in the Annapurna region can cost several thousand US dollars without the right coverage.

We strongly recommend purchasing your policy before departure and carrying both a printed and digital copy on the trail. Coverage terms vary significantly between providers, so take the time to compare policies carefully before committing.

    Mardi Himal Trek Distance

Mardi Himal Trek covers approximately 45–50 kilometres across 4–5 active trekking days. Daily walking distances range from 8km to 14km, with elevation gains of 400–900m on ascending days — a pace we have carefully designed to balance progress with proper acclimatisation.

The trail starts at Phedi (1,100m) and climbs through Deurali, Forest Camp, Low Camp, Rest Camp, and High Camp before reaching the Upper Viewpoint at 4,240m. The total elevation gain from the trailhead to the viewpoint is approximately 3,140m, spread across several days for safe adaptation.

The descent follows a different and equally beautiful path through Sidding village, adding variety to the return journey. Understanding the daily stages helps you pace yourself well and arrive at each camp with energy to spare.

Packing List for Mardi Himal Trek

Packing well for Mardi Himal Trek means preparing for everything from warm lower-elevation forests to near-freezing nights at High Camp. Essential items include moisture-wicking base layers, a fleece mid-layer, an insulated jacket, a waterproof shell, sturdy trekking boots, trekking poles, and a sleeping bag rated to at least -10°C.

High-SPF sunscreen, UV sunglasses, and lip balm are absolutely critical above 3,000m. Your daypack should include a water bottle, purification tablets, trail snacks, a basic first aid kit, and your permits.

We provide a duffel bag and sleeping bag as part of our package, which takes some of the gear burden off you. Keep your pack practical and light — a comfortable weight is around 8–9kg. Most tea houses along our route provide laundry facilities, so there is no need to over-pack.

    Accommodation on Mardi Himal Trek

On our Mardi Himal Trek, we arrange comfortable three-star hotel stays in Kathmandu and Pokhara at either end of the journey. On the trail, accommodation is provided by well-run tea houses and guesthouses at each camp — simple, warm, and perfectly suited to the trekking experience.

At Forest Camp, Rest Camp, and High Camp, expect small twin-bed rooms with shared bathrooms and limited hot water. Blankets are generally provided, but we always recommend bringing your own sleeping bag for cold nights at higher elevations — we include one in our package for exactly this reason.

Electricity for charging devices is available at most camps, sometimes for a small fee. By booking with us, you remove the risk of arriving at a full lodge during peak season — we handle all accommodation reservations in advance.

Food & Drink on Mardi Himal Trek

Our Mardi Himal Trek package includes full board meals during all trekking days — breakfast, lunch, and dinner — so you are always well-fuelled on the trail. Tea houses serve wholesome, filling food designed for mountain trekking. Dal bhat — the traditional Nepali staple of lentil soup, rice, and vegetable curry — is available at every stop, often with unlimited refills.

Menus also include noodle soup, pasta, porridge, omelettes, and Tibetan bread. Variety narrows at higher camps, so enjoy the wider selection lower on the trail. All drinking water must be treated or purchased as certified bottled water — tap and stream water is not safe, untreated.

Staying well hydrated above 3,000m is essential for good acclimatisation. We advise avoiding alcohol at altitude, as it accelerates dehydration and can worsen AMS symptoms.

Mardi Himal Base Camp — What to Expect at the Top

Reaching the Mardi Himal Upper Viewpoint (4,240m) and base camp (4,500m) is the moment our entire itinerary builds toward. On a clear morning, the panorama is absolutely extraordinary — Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) rises directly in front of you while Annapurna South and Hiunchuli dominate the western skyline.

We wake our group early at High Camp and hike to the viewpoint in time for sunrise — and for good reason. The changing light transforms the snowfields from pale blue to deep gold in a way that is genuinely difficult to put into words. The terrain here is exposed and rocky with no shelter from wind, so warm layering is non-negotiable.

The Mardi Himal Base Camp views are raw, elemental, and genuinely remote-feeling — remarkable given how relatively short and accessible our approach from Pokhara is.

Views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) on Mardi Himal Trek

One of the most compelling reasons our guests choose the Mardi Himal Trek over other routes in the Annapurna region is the close, unobstructed view of Machhapuchhre (6,993m) — Nepal's iconic Fishtail Mountain. Unlike Poon Hill or the Annapurna Circuit, where Machhapuchhre appears as a distant silhouette, our ridge route places you almost face-to-face with its dramatic twin-peaked summit.

The views improve steadily as you ascend, becoming absolutely awe-inspiring from High Camp and the Upper Viewpoint. Because Machhapuchhre is a sacred and unclimbed peak, it remains entirely pristine — adding a genuine sense of reverence to the experience.

Sunrise is well worth the early start. Low-angle light sculpts the snowfields in shades of orange and gold — one of the most photographed moments on our entire trek programme.

Mardi Himal vs Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Both the Mardi Himal Trek and the Annapurna Base Camp Trek sit within the same conservation area, but they offer very different experiences. ABC is longer (10–14 days), reaches a higher altitude (4,130m), and passes through the dramatic Annapurna Sanctuary — a glacial amphitheatre ringed by 8,000m peaks.

Mardi Himal Trek is shorter (5–8 days), quieter, and delivers more intimate mountain views — particularly of Machhapuchhre. Mardi Himal wins on solitude and trail atmosphere, while ABC offers a broader, more immersive high-altitude experience.

Both routes require the same permit and suit non-technical trekkers with moderate fitness. For those with enough time, we can also combine the two into a single extended journey — one of the most rewarding itineraries we offer in the Annapurna region.

Mardi Himal vs Poon Hill Trek

Both the Mardi Himal and Poon Hill treks are excellent short options in the Annapurna region, but they suit different trekkers with different expectations. Poon Hill (3–4 days) is one of Nepal's most accessible treks, leading to a celebrated sunrise viewpoint at 3,210m — a wonderful choice for those with very limited time or no prior trekking experience.

Mardi Himal Trek reaches a higher altitude (4,240m), demands more physical activity, and requires 5–8 days. In return, it rewards you with quieter trails, deeper wilderness, and far more immersive mountain scenery. Both depart from Pokhara and require the same permits.

For trekkers who can manage the extra days and altitude, Mardi Himal delivers a significantly richer Himalayan experience. If time is your only constraint, Poon Hill is absolutely still a worthwhile journey.

Why Mardi Himal Is Nepal's Best Short Hidden Trek

Mardi Himal Trek is one of Nepal's most rewarding and genuinely underrated trekking experiences. Opened as an official trail only in 2012, it receives a fraction of the foot traffic of the Annapurna Circuit or Everest Base Camp — yet delivers mountain scenery that is absolutely comparable to both.

Our ridge route offers close-range views of Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range in near-complete solitude, passing through authentic Gurung and Magar villages that see relatively few foreign visitors. That combination of wilderness, culture, and intimacy with the mountains is rare on any trail in Nepal.

Achievable in 5–8 days, this is the trek we recommend to travellers with limited time who refuse to compromise on quality. If you are looking for the best short hidden trek in Nepal, we believe Mardi Himal is the answer.

Can You Combine Mardi Himal with Annapurna Base Camp?

Absolutely — combining the Mardi Himal Trek with the Annapurna Base Camp Trek is one of the most rewarding extended itineraries we offer in the Annapurna region. The two routes share sections of the lower trail and link naturally into a single continuous journey of 12–16 days.

A combined trek typically follows our Mardi Himal ridge to the Upper Viewpoint before descending and continuing to the Annapurna Sanctuary. The reverse order is equally possible and can suit certain acclimatisation preferences — our team will advise on the best direction based on your group.

This extended route delivers everything: the intimate ridge walk and close Machhapuchhre views of Mardi Himal, alongside the grand glacial panorama of ABC. It is widely regarded as the most complete Annapurna trekking experience available, and we would love to help you plan it.
